20% Time 5-27-08

While watching the video Windows XP Tutoria #4 Putting Together an Intel Computer by macmad13, I learned how to put together an Intel motherboard with the variety of computer parts it consists of. Many of the parts on the motherboard are parts the that are inserted into certain spots on the motherboard at a location provided for the certain part. Something very important that needs to be inserted into the motherboard is the PCI fan over the Intel chip because it conducts a lot of heat and without a fan the chip will burn. The random access memory, or RAM, have slots on the motherboard where they should be inserted and when inserted should have a snap sound. There is a graphics card that looks similar to the RAM but has a different shape and can only be inserted into a brown slot at a different location on the motherboard. Another part that looks similar but has a different shape is the PCI card and it is inserted into the white slots right beneath the graphics card. There is a PCI fan that is connected right next to the heat sink but only its cable is connected to the motherboard and the PCI fan is screwed on top of the heat sink. There are colored cables that are connected to each other that are called the P1 and is connected to a larger white slot separate from the other white slots on the motherboard. Making sure things are inserted into the appropriate slots is very important because with the wrong size and forcing them in will just cause them or the slot to break.

During 20% Time today I spent the time hooking up an Intel Computer and fixing things that were not there inserting them where their appropriate locations are and then making sure if the computer can be turned on and can still operate. The computer was practically messed up with a few broken pieces and seemed old cause it probably wasn’t use for a long time just sitting there. However, the Intel Computer was not totally broken looking somewhat still able to be used and I was able to run the computer, but it most likely wont be able to last for a very long time. The chords connected to the back of the computer all have their other ends connected to some device and have certain slots that allow certain devices be inserted into their appropriate location.

There were a number of chords that needed to be inserted to the back of the computer in order for it to be able to function and be used, one end connected to the computer and the other end to another electronic device or the an outlet to take some power and energy. At the top-right at the back of the Intel Computer is where I inserted the power cable and its other end connected to an outlet from the wall where the computer can absorb power and make itself function. At the top-left of the computer is the fan and right under it is where I plugged in the keyboard and mouse chords. The blue chord under the keyboard and mouse chords is the monitor chord where I plugged its other end to the back of the monitor. Pictures show up in the screen of the monitor when the computer sends pixels that are rearranged to show how things look on a monitor. Right next to the monitor chord is a brownish-green chord and it is the printer schord with its other end connects to the printer at teh right of the Intel computer. Those chords are all the basics that a person needs for their computer that they can actually be able to do something telling the computer what it must perform with devices that are not found on the computer itself.

In order for a computer to be able to function appropriately, the computer needs to use electrical power to transfer energy from one area to another so that everything inside the computer can be able to operate. The numerous cables a computer needs and uses help all the parts inside do what is meant for it to do just by sending energy through the cables. This is an easy task because all the cables are connected to one computer part that supplies the power for all the other various parts the computer consists of, the power supply. Mostly every part needs electricity to operate and all need to operate simultaneously which means there are a large number of parts that need to be powered in order for the user to use numbers of things all at the same time. The power supply takes a large amount of electricity from a persons wall and distibute it out through the cables to whatever the other end of the cable is connected to. Each cable can consist of more than one cable but with different colors and are of various sizes each for their own purposes, like taking more electrical power than other cables. There are different colors of cables that computer parts are connected to and one part can have numerous cables depending on the amount of energy it requires to operate. Some parts that are connected to the other end of the cable with the first side connected to the power supply is the motherboard, the CD-rom drive, the floppy drive, the hard drive, and countless other parts.

In the Sony computer, the variety of colored cables are located at the top center of the computer but are expanded out to be able to connect to all the different parts in a computer. The power supply is located at the top-left of the computer and is where all the cables are first connected to. The the other end of the cables are connected to all different locations inside the computer which is how all of the parts are supplied with electrical energy. The largest cables are connected to locations like on the motherboard at the bottom-left while the numerous, colorful but smaller cables are connected to parts like the the CD-rom drive, the floppy drive, and the hard drive at the top-right.

Similar to the Sony computer, in the Dell Computer the variety of colored cables are located at the top center of the computer and are expanded out to be able to connect to all the different parts in a computer. The power supply is also located at the top-left of the computer and is where all the cables are first connected to. The the other end of the cables are, the same,connected to all different locations inside the computer which is how all of the parts are supplied with electrical energy. The numerous and colorful cables are connected to parts like the the CD-rom drive and the floppy drive at the top-right, the hard drive at the bottom-right, and as well as the motherboard at the bottom-left. Cables in the Sony and Del computer are connected similarly because all computer require these cables in order to make every part in the computer function.

The motherboard found inside a computer is the most important and essential part that a computer requires in order for the computer to operate correctly in the way the user expects it to. There are many things inside the computer that connects to certain areas on the motherboard like plugs where the various wires are connected to or slots where the the various cards are inserted into there appropriate locations. Most of the cards that are inserted into the motherboard have slots connected to them that are shown in the back of the computer that allow electronic devices outside the computer to be connected to the computer and perform depending on what the computer instructs it to do.

The first card located above the other cards is the video card, also called the graphics accelerator card, display adapter, or graphics card, function is to decide how to use the pixels on the screen to create the image from the information received from the central processing unit and then sends it to the monitor. Beneath the video card is the sound card, also known as the audio card, allows the user to be able to hear sound produced by the computer and output audio signals through speakers which can be connected to the back of the computer into a slot that is part of the audio card. Last is a card where the modem would be connected to, produce a signal that can be transmitted easily and decoded to reproduce the original digital data. The are additional slots that allow additional modifications to be done to the computer that the owner would want their computer to perform.

In the Dell computer, the motherboard is located at the bottom-left inside the computer and consists of numerous slots for the various cards to be connected into it. At the top of the picture is the video card, at the left is the sound card, at the right are the memory cards of that are also connected to the motherboard’s slots, and an the bottom is the mode card. The video card, sound card, and the modem card are located at the bottom-left of the motherboard and the memory cards are located at the top-right of the motherboard.

Very similar to the Del Computer, in the Sony computer, the motherboard is located at the bottom-left inside the computer and consists of numerous slots for the various cards to be connected into it. At the top of the picture is the video card, at the left is the sound card, and at the right are the memory cards of that are also connected to the motherboard’s slots. The video card and sound card are located at the bottom-left of the motherboard and the memory cards are located at the top-left of the motherboard. All computer have very similar parts inside it due to the fact that those parts are important to the operation of the computer when someone uses it.

The motherboards in computers many sometimes look different and are able to perform differently from others, but all motherboards are found in a computer for the same reasons and without it the computer would not be able to operate. The motherboard is the most important part in the computer and usually found in the back of everything inside the computer that most parts inside are connected to. The motherboard is a flat board device that has parts sticking out of it and consists of insert slots the the various computer parts can be plugged into.

In the Dell computer, the motherboard is found in the bottom-left of the computer and can be seen when removing the cover and looking at a board that many cables are plugged into. The cables connected to the motherboard have different colors and each are connected to various parts in the computer and do their own separate things for the operation of the computer. The video card, sound card and modem are inserted in the bottom-left of the motherboard and they are little slits that can be connected into the appropriate locations where they are meant to be to be functioning. In the back of the computers there are slots, called access slots, that allow electrical devices outside the computer to be connected and operate bases on the computer. The random access memory is located between the top-center and the top-right of the motherboard and the capacitors are located all over the motherboard.

As for the Sony motherboard, the Sony computer is more modern and built after the Del computer which means it should work more efficiently with less problems encountered as the owner uses their computer. The Sony motherboard is composed with similar parts that the Del motherboard are composed of just with several additional parts and makes the computer work more conveniently. The PCI Bus slots lie in the middle-left of the motherboard just above the ISA Bus slots where the card slits are inserted in and on the far left is the Flash BIOS Rom. The motherboard is an essential part that all computers need in order to bring up the sydtems and programs for the owner who uses their computer.

Those who do not know much information about computers view all to be overwhelming and extremely complicated when taking off the cover and figuring out what each part is called and where they belong. However, knowing everything a computer is composed of will help a person with any type of computer they decide to purchase because all computers consist of the important parts computers need to operate. The new, “up-to-date” computers have additional parts those the older ones don’t have but those are just a few more parts to learn about and aware of the most important is a good place to start.

Even though the Sony Computer is a more recent built and therefore more complex computer to configure and set up than the old Dell Computer, the majority of parts that are required are the same for both computers which makes it less confusing. In the Sony Computer, the motherboard is located at the bottom right of the computer and it is the most important part of the computer. The hard drive is located at the top right of the computer along with the CD-Rom drive and the floppy drive. At the top left is where the power supply is located. There are cables that are connected into all the different parts inside the computer. From the back of the computer are where all the access slots are located where all the variety of electrical devices can be connected to the computer.

In the Dell Computer, many of the parts that the computer consists of are similar and almost exactly the same as what the Sony Computer consists of just several connected into different parts inside the computer. Just like the Sony Computer, the motherboard is located at the bottom left of the computer, the power supply is also located at the top left of the computer, and all the access slots are also located at the back of the computer where all the electrical devices are plugged in. However, though the CD-Rom drive drive and the floppy drive are located at the top right, the hard drive is connected to the bottom right of the computer. Same parts are found in all computers because those parts are essential to the operation of the computer and making different areas function and practically revealing knowing one computer means knowing all computers.

From the article Computer Hardware-Information about computer Video Cards by Computer Hope.com, I learned a lot about the graphics card and everything it performs for the computer along with its connections. The graphics card, also known as the video card, display adapter, video adapter, video boards, video display boards, and graphics accelerator card, decides how to translate information, using pixels, into graphics and text that show up on the monitor. On the motherboard is a specific slot designed for the graphics adapter called the Advanced Graphics Port, AGP. The graphics card includes a video memory that allow it to run at higher resolutions and more efficient speed also allows their user to manage their computer’s software data. The graphics card also comes with its own graphics coprocessor for performing graphic calculations. Some video cards can add onvideo capture, TV tuner adapter, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 decoding or even FireWire, mouse, light pen, joystick connectors, or even the ability to connect two monitors.

While watching this video, the person demonstrated how to connect a video card, a sound card, an ethernet card, and a modem card. At first when no parts are connected inside the computer there are metal plates inserted into the empty spaces and when when adding on cards all require screws to connect the cards in place. The video card is connected to the top, then comes the ethernet card, the modem card, and finally the sound card at the bottom so it wont pick up any interference. Connect the CD audio card from the CD drive before connecting the sound card to the computer.

From the article Anatomy of an Optical Drive by Gabriel Torres, I learned about the optical drive in a computer that is referred to lasers that can see and read data on optical drives , CDs or DVDs that are made up of millions of bumps and dips that the lasers can read and the computer can understand. You are able to open the optical drive only when it is turned off but the laser beam generated by the optical pickup unit is invisible and could cause blindness when you look straight at it without even knowing. Optical inputs have three basic connectors; one for power, one for exchanging data with the computer, and one for the audio output, also called the analog audio output, and should be connected to the sound board. Optical units can also have one digital audio output, also called Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format(SPDIF), that transmits digital audio instead of analog audio geting a far better sound quality from your audio CDs and DVDs.

The interface connector is used to exchange data between the optical unit and the computer is better known as. The most common interface used is the Advanced Technology Attachment(ATA), however, other interfaces are still used like the Serial ATA(SATA), which was created to replace ATA; Small Computer Systems Interface(SCSI), which is targeted to servers; and proprietary, which was seen on the very first optical units before the ATA standard was changed to be compatible with optical units. The master/slave jumper on ATA optical units can be configured in three different ways. One way is master, which means that the drive will be the only one attached to the cable that connects the optical unit to the computer. Master is the best way to connect an optical unit to your computer as single drive on the secondary ATA port on the motherboard, while connecting the hard disk drive alone on the primary ATA port using a different cable. The second way is slave, which means that the drive will be the second drive attached to the cable that connects the optical unit to the computer. Finally the last way is Cable Select(CS), which means that you will use a special cable that the configuration of whether a drive will be master or slave will be made by the position of the unit on the cable.

While consuming from the article Power Supply Tutorial by Gabriel Torres and Cássio Lima on the web, I learned that the power supply is a vital component of the operation of the computer and without it the computer would be useless just be an inert box full of plastic and metal. The power supply is the metal box found in the corner of the case and contains a power-cord receptacle and a cooling fan, facilitating the airflow inside the computer. The power supply is the source of electrical power and converts the alternating current line from a person’s house to the direct current needed by the personal computer. This device supplies the fuel for the PC parts to operate properly.

The power supply contains a transformer and a capacitance of the electrolytic capacitor and the size of the parts are inversely proportional to the frequency of the input alternating current voltage, the lower the alternating current voltage frequency, the larger the size of components and vice-versa. When the input voltage frequency is increased, the transformer and the electrolytic capacitor can be very small. The rectification is done by a set of diodes, transforming the alternating current voltage into pulsating voltage. Then filtering is done by an electrolytic capacitor, transforming this pulsating voltage into almost direct current. A high quality and with enough capacity power supply can increase the durability of your equipment. A low-quality, defective, or bad-intentioned power supply can cause several intermittent problems, like lock the PC, can result in hard disk bad blocks, can result in the infamous “blue screen of death” errors, and random resets and freezings, are mostly difficult to be solved.

Multitouch Computing

From the informative video created in February 2006, Jeff Han on TED Talks by lmf2046 from TED Talks, the speaker Jefferson Han, who attended New York University(NYU), taught me many things that a Multitouch and the things the new technology was capable and used for. The Multitouch allows the user to use as many multiple fingers as they can and the machine automatically reads everything the user wants it to do at the same time instantly. One of the most convenient things the Multitouch allows their user to do is to have a keyboard right on the screen instead of having to have a separate one and having to insert it as well as not having to have a mouse because the user is able to use their fingers to click and move things around. To enlarge an item on the screen the user simply needs to remember a variety of finger methods to perform different things, like when enlarging or rotating something on the screen, many that look two-dimensional could be viewed in a three-dimension way seen when rotating appropriately.

Another informative video that I watched was Microsoft multitouch computer display by Skeeski, which informed me with more information about the Multitouche and what other things the machine is capable of performing for different reasons and usage. The first model of the Multitouch that was built to look like a coffee table was created in March. Whatever was place on top of the screen was recognized by the machine and allowed users to play with whatever the machine displayed for the object, graphics related to it. The Multitouch is capable of reading a persons phone or camera when the owner places their device on the screen and the machine instantly displays the items from the device. When a person takes a picture with their camera or with their phone for instant, once the device is place on the screen the photo will pop up under the device. The user could easily edit their photo merely by using their fingers to pull it as they move along. The same goes for a video they have which would be displayed on the screen as a photo and can easily be played. Another convenient thing the Multitouch is capable of performing is when the user needs a map to find a certain area and destination. The machine would know and display every route and street a person could take or when looking at continents the user could view the landmarks simply by rotating the map to see the land up close. The Multitouch provides a new and simple method for users to work on the computer which will make their work easier and more convenient to deal with.
